About UsWUSC is not the average college radio station. For starters, you can hear the station all the way across campus. In fact, broadcasting at 2500 watts of power, WUSC can be heard for thirty miles in every direction (on a bad day), or 2800+ square miles. Those interested in hearing for themselves can tune in at 90.5 on the FM dial. That means we send out our signal at a frequency of 90.5 megahertz, making a single wavelength of WUSC's signal longer than a human being. Our webstream at wusc.sc.edu literally has listeners from all over the Earth. So what makes WUSC any more relevant than your run-of-the-mill, anything-goes college radio? Well, we aren't just here to have fun. Our non-Top-40 music policy contributes the most to our goal of educating deejays and listeners alike. A smorgasbord of specialty programming, highlighting specific genres from African Funk to Indie Pop to IDM to Free Jazz to News Talk to old-fashioned Rock'n'Roll, delves into entire fields of music that no other station in South Carolina even touches. Not only that, but as a non-commercial station, you can tune in at any time, confident that no one's going to try to sell you anything but good music. Now the caveat: as a non-commercial, non-Top-40 radio station, 90.5 is not for everyone. If we were, why we'd be Top-40! The rule of thumb with WUSC is that you can tune in at any time of day, 24/7, and hear either the best or worst song you've ever heard. Best to look at it as part of the experimentation that comes with worthwhile learning. You want to make an omelet, crack a couple of eggs. You want to expand your horizons, let your ears take some chances. Take the challenge: listen five different times, for ten minutes, for one week. If you don't hear something that really piques your interest, then by all means, you're free to give us up forever if that's how you feel. Better yet, call the studio at (803) 576-WUSC and talk to the DJ on air. For more information check out our Wikipedia page and the WUSC Alumni Association!
